Overview

This program will introduce you to the process of design and develop your expertise in industrial engineering product design and equip you with the necessary skills to start and run your own business in this rapidly growing industry.  Taking you from concept to creation, the programme will introduce you to the development and production through a practical, hands-on curriculum that exposes you to a wide range of product types and processes.  

  

It takes a modern approach by exposing students to several new and emerging developments and concepts in the manufacturing field, specifically looking at how new disruptive technologies and paradigms are influencing the field including rapid prototyping, 3D printingCnC Milling, de-centralised lean manufacturing and the influence of the 4th Industrial revolution on design process. You will also work with Virtual Reality technology using your Goggles VR headset, and other VR Technologies. (Review the VR Lab block below)

  • Duration

    Full Time

    • 10 months (+-10 Sessions/Week, 2:00 hours each, class times are between 08:30 – 12:00 or 12:30 – 16:00) 
    • All hours are achieved via your study duration at the institute and project-based assignments.

     

    *Sessions will be grouped together to lower cost of traveling, however, in some cases classes may not follow this convention and schedules are subject to change.

     

    Online

    • Online = 10 Months (Online live Q&A classes, once/week, 17:00 - 18:00)  
    • Part Time = 10 months (2 x evening classes, 18:00 to 21:00, Mon & Wed OR Tues & Thur)    
    • Hours are obtained through a combination of live virtual Q&A sessions, pre-recorded video lectures and project-based tasks.

Module 1: Business and Entrepreneurship in the Design field  

 

This subject will introduce the student to the skills needed to start a business in the design fields, including the process of research to ensure that any new idea is properly researched and evaluated moving ahead.

Module 2: Design Technology 1a 

 

Students will be introduced to the traditional and new materials, including the new breakthrough technologies that will shape the future of design.

  • Design paradigms in changing world 

  

Module 3: Design Drawing and Presentation 1a 

 

No design can be thoroughly understood and explained without sketching. Students will be introduced to the process of sketching with traditional media and conventions 

 

 

  • The outline includes but is not limited to: 
  • Sketching with traditional hand sketching tools.  
  • Sketching with Autodesk Sketchbook and sketching tablets.  

 

 

Module 4: Design Theory  

 

Students are introduced to the process of creative thinking and will employ design theory and principles of design on their own projects.

Semester 2: 

 

Module 5: Business and Project Management 

 

Students are introduced to the skills of managing a running business and the related processes. Project management is introduced to ensure deadlines are met and resources are well managed, based on the international PMBOK curriculum, both critical for the successful transition from start-up to mature business.

Students will explore traditional and new Manufacturing processes, Decentralised manufacturing and the influence of the 4th tech revolution on design process.

Module 7: Design Drawing and Presentation 1b 

 

Students will take their concept into the next phase of design by employing Engineering Drawings (CAD), Presentation Graphics (PS) and Digital Rendering to prepare for client presentation and  manufacturing

Module 8: Design History and Theory  

 

A study of Modern and Post Modern art and design styles, an overview of Furniture design history, designs of the Bauhaus era will give students a robust background and foundation of the design paradigms that are prevalent today. Further exploration of design in the era of disruptive Technology will assist the student in understanding the possible future elements that will have an impact on design 

 

Virtual Reality 

With Virtual Reality becoming one of the fastest growing fields in the game industry we believe no gaming course would be complete without introducing the student to the specific requirements and nuances of designing for this interface. Our VR module is a standalone course that will not only introduce the basic concepts of VR but also expose the student to some of the fields beyond gaming where this is being applied and the specific needs of working in those industries. This module will cover the following topics: 

  • Introduction to Virtual and Augmented Reality: This topic will cover the basics of Virtual Reality, the concepts and ready to use VR environments. Learners will use their Goggles VR Headset and experience various VR environments both static and interactive.

  • Introduction to the 3D Environment using Virtual Reality: A topic to introduce students to the concept of 3D using virtual reality. By using VR, learners will conceptualize the 3D environment much quicker. 
  • Modelling for Virtual Reality:  Guidelines and tips for ensuring correct modelling techniques are followed to ensure the best experience. 
  • Preparing your 3D Data for Virtualization and Immersion: This topic will cover how to prepare your data for the virtual reality environment. It will explore the conversion of your data through various channel, using applicable software so that it is VR ready. 
  • Design Validation through Virtual Reality: Use VR for design validation. 
  • Presenting your data in Virtual Reality:  Using VR platforms, learn how to present and use your data in various VR scenarios, from basic stereo images to full immersive experiences.
