Principles inherent in this code:
Validity
Disciplinary action can be linked to legislation and / or Academy policy
Honesty
Disciplinary processes are open and transparent
Reliability
The process followed to report and investigate a transgression is reliable in its consistency
Fairness
The ability to see both sides of a situation and to act within the guidelines of policy and common law
Empathy
Humane treatment of others, taking cognisance of the other party
Respect
Both parties in a dispute act in a respectful manner towards the other party, where such respect is rooted in non-discrimination and the ability to see beyond the parameters of the immediate situation
Humility
Our ability to respect ourselves and to respect those whom we teach without exercising arrogance

Description of Transgression

Absence from class
Student out of class for more than 30 minutes without permission; Student signs register then skips class; being absent without a valid reason
1st offence: Verbal warning 2nd offence: Written Warning 3rd: offence: Final Written Warning 4th offence: Inquiry
Note: A Student cannot be punished twice for the same offence
Absence from assessment and none or late submission of assignments
Not turning up for either an internal or external exam; failure to submit assignments; failure to submit assignments on time; failure to sit for Department Exam Failure to attend and write an internal and / or external exam Failure to submit an assignment or late submission of same
Internal exam: Fail Internal / External exam: forfeit exam period Assignments are assessed: marks are forfeited A not yet competent assessment result will be recorded
A not-yet competent result will be recorded
Plagiarism
Copying from another Student; copying work from any source & passing it off as own work Representing another Student’s work as your own
Suspension followed by a disciplinary hearing
Fraud
Falsely producing a certificate or qualification Submitting assessment evidence that is not authentically produced by the Student
Sexual harassment
Comments with sexual undertones; sexual advances; innuendo; lewd language or gestures; indecent exposure
Substance abuse
Using alcohol / drugs on the premises; Using / dealing in drugs on the premises
Suspension followed by a disciplinary hearing The company reserves the right to lay criminal charges
Carrying weapons on Academy premises
Not recognising the Lecturer / Assessor as the presiding authority; deliberate flaunting of authority or failure to follow a reasonable instruction
1st offence: Written warning 2nd offence: Final Warning 3rd offence: Disciplinary hearing
Physical abuse or assault
Shoving; punching; bullying; an action that causes bodily harm
Gross negligence on campus
Any action causing damage to the Academy's fixed or moveable property
Disciplinary hearing
Theft
Stealing the Academy's property OR stealing the property of another Student
Minor Transgressions
Poor time keeping
Being habitually late for class; habitually submitting assignments after the published date/time
1st offence: counselling 2nd offence: verbal warning 3rd offence: written warning 4th offence: disciplinary inquiry
Unacceptable language
Swearing; blasphemy; aggressive discussions about politics; coercion to join any political party
Disrespect
Belittling; any action causing loss of dignity; rudeness; discrimination; unwarranted aggression
Sleeping in class
Lying with head on arms; sitting with closed eyes; any posture other than sitting in chair with straight spine & attentive attitude
Gossip / Slander
Spreading rumours; unconstrained conversation or reports about other people; repeating unconfirmed details about people; false statements about another person False statements about the Academy
Victimisation
Exercising retribution against another Student for reporting a transgression; exercising retribution against a staff member for applying discipline; exercising retribution against a staff member for low marks on an assignment
Emotional Abuse
Any behaviour that can result in anxiety or depression
Viewing non-study related material on electronic devices
Reading/working with/viewing non-study related material during class.
Failure to report accidents, injuries and emergencies
A Student who does not report accidents, injuries, emergencies to a Lecturer, an Assessor or the Head of Academics
1st offence: verbal warning 2nd offence: written warning 3rd offence: disciplinary inquiry
Smoking
Smoking in non-designated areas
